Qualifications:
A minimum of one year of experience with management of parks, public lands, natural resources or landscaping. Must be highly organized and detail oriented. Effective team worker. Outdoor experience, off-trail navigation skills, and a high level of comfort spending time in remote locations. Must have effective written and oral communication skills. Must understand basic construction and landscaping techniques. Must have experience using hand tools and some power equipment. Ability to carry 50 lbs. over rough terrain required. Must be flexible with schedule and willing to work weekends. Must possess a valid driver’s license or have reliable method of transportation to travel to the state park. Ability to speak Spanish, a plus.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance to parking areas, improved interior roads, & trail system, and infrastructure (kiosks, directional signs, trail markers, benches, decks, gates, barriers, drainage features,etc.). Record activities in staff report log.
- Engage with park goers to explain park and recreation rules and respond to inquiries on the natural and cultural features, facilities, activities, accessibility of trails and other resources.
- Collect and dispose of garbage
- Monitor public use; log misuse of areas off-limits (restoration sites, etc.
- Attend meetings with Scenic Hudson parks management team
- Assist with trail improvement projects
- Perform landscape maintenance including occasional mowing/weed whacking/leaf blowing
- Maintain a clean and organized workshop and maintenance shed including keeping tools cleaned and sharpened.
- Be the eyes and ears of park trails, report trees down, storm damage, and other repair needs.
- Assist with park events including event preparation, parking, public interaction, clean up
- Assist with educational events, training events, family oriented activities, organized hikes, training sessions, educational tours, and cultural events
- Assist with volunteer workdays involving trail work and natural resource restoration
- Be available to work on weekends and occasional holidays
- Occasionally assist Scenic Hudson parks management team with other trail and natural resource projects
Time frame of position May – November
Compensation:
Temporary Seasonal position. $20-25/hour, no benefits.
