When it comes to climate, globe-shaking events like the COVID-19 pandemic have reminded us that big change is possible — and fast. We partnered with The River to ask 12 regional sustainability advocates to share their climate solutions for the Hudson Valley. Read about their innovative ideas for the next 10-15 years — from freezing surplus local produce for food pantries to swapping prisons for farmland.

people treat each other with love, respect and compassion.

Providing more Newburgh families with access to fresh food, in 2020 we worked with local teens to create an urban farm on the city’s Crystal Lake property. The youth shared 240 pounds of fruits and vegetables with their neighbors.

Protecting 31 acres in Highland Falls, we took the first step in creating a public park within walking distance of 2,500 residents, giving them a truly local place to admire inspiring vistas of the river and mountains.

Working to stop a projected 4,000% increase of air pollution in communities already suffering high rates of asthma and other respiratory illnesses, we’re campaigning to halt the proposed Danskammer fracked-gas power plant in Newburgh.

Inspiring the next generation of eco-activists, our educators helped create  “People Who Make a Difference,” posters recognizing women, People of Color, youth and members of Indigenous groups working on the front lines of the environmental movement.

Supporting family farms — some dating back three centuries — that have suffered significant losses due to the pandemic, we created an online directory to connect them to new markets.

Cultivating safe, healthy places in Poughkeepsie to gather and enjoy the outdoors, we’re working with partners to create a community farm that will supply fresh food to local families and provide space for residents to grow their own produce.

Confronting the climate crisis, we convened the Hudson Carbon Consortium, uniting farmers, forest managers, scientists and community leaders to explore natural solutions for reducing — and even reversing — carbon and methane emissions.
